The United States Mint is marking two major milestones in 2026 for its best-known bullion coins. The American Eagle program turns 40, and the American Gold Buffalo reaches its 20th anniversary. Released for the first time in 2006, the American Gold Buffalo is still the only 24-karat gold coin struck every year by the United States Mint. Right now, 2026 American Buffalo 1 oz Gold Coins in certified condition are available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 2026 American Buffalo 1 oz Gold Coin available here comes protected in a sturdy plastic slab and is certified in perfect Mint State 70 condition. MS70 coins have full mint brilliance and no visible marks or distractions when viewed without magnification. Coins labeled Early Release are those delivered to the grading service within 30 days of the coins official release from the mint.
Obverse
On the obverse of 2026 American Buffalo Gold Coins is the portrait of an indigenous figure. Shown in right-profile, the design includes braided hair and a feather woven into the braid for added texture. This classic image was created by James Earle Fraser in 1913 for the Buffalo Nickel and is widely recognized as one of the most enduring depictions of an indigenous figure used on American currency. The inscriptions here include LIBERTY and 2026.
Reverse
The reverse of 2026 Buffalo 1 oz Gold Coins showcases an American bison. Fraser also designed this side for the 1913 Buffalo Nickel, and it depicts a large bison standing firmly on a small mound. The animals appearance is commonly linked to Black Diamond, a bison that lived at the Central Park Zoo in New York during the early 20th century. Inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, $50, and 1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD.
History
The United States Mint introduced the 1 oz American Gold Buffalo in 2006 as Americas first 24-karat (.9999 fine) gold bullion coin, providing a higher-purity option than the 22-karat Gold Eagle series. Created under the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005, the Gold Buffalo was intended to give buyers a U.S.-made coin that could stand beside popular 24-karat offerings from other countries, such as the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf.
