This image also comes from Frasers original 1913 Buffalo nickel work and is known for its bold, natural look. Fraser is believed to have modeled the bison after Black Diamond, a well-known bison that lived at the Central Park Zoo in New York in the early 1900s. History

The Gold Buffalo features one full troy ounce of .9999 pure gold and carries a $50 face value. Both sides display artwork by James Earle Fraser, using the same designs that appeared on the famous Indian Head (Buffalo) nickel produced from 1913 to 1938. The pairing of a Native American profile with an American bison helped make that circulating coin an instant classic, and the modern Gold Buffalo continues that tradition with a design many collectors recognize right away.
