History

The legend of the Loch Ness Monster has been discussed for centuries, with some of the earliest references dating back more than fourteen hundred years. Since then, the loch has been the subject of many investigations, including sonar research in the 1970s and 1980s and a 2018 environmental DNA study. That more recent study found large amounts of eel DNA in the water, supporting the idea that some sightings may have been caused by unusually large European eels.
