The British Lion and Eagle Series from The Royal Mint is a relatively new bullion program that highlights two historic national symbols. First released in 2024, the series debuted with gold and silver coins designed for long-term ownership. The 2026 edition introduces the first updated Lion and Eagle design since the series began. Right now, 2026 British The Lion and The Eagle 1 oz Gold Coins are available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
All 2026 British The Lion and The Eagle 1 oz Gold Coins are struck in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. Each coin contains 1 troy oz of .9999 pure gold. Single coins ship in plastic flips, while multiple coins are available in tubes of 10 or Monster Boxes containing 100 total coins. Each Monster Box is packed with 10 individual tubes.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2026 British The Lion and The Eagle Gold Coin displays the effigy of King Charles III created by Martin Jennings. His Majesty appears in left-profile relief without a crown, following established British minting tradition. This portrait first appeared on UK coinage in late 2022. Inscriptions include CHARLES III, D.G. REX F.D., and 100 POUNDS.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2026 The Lion and The Eagle 1 oz Gold Coin, a British lion is shown standing along a coastal setting while an American bald eagle flies overhead. The design brings both animals together in a single scene that emphasizes balance and shared symbolism. The artwork was created by Jonathan Olliffe. Inscriptions read THE LION AND THE EAGLE, 2026, and 1 OZ FINE GOLD 999.9.
History
The lion has been used as a symbol of British royalty for hundreds of years. During the Middle Ages, lions were featured on royal standards and coats of arms to represent authority and courage. By the 1100s, three lions became closely linked with English kingship. Even without native lions in Britain, the symbol remained a lasting part of the nations royal and military imagery.
