The Royal Mint began The Tudor Beasts Series in 2022 as the continuation of the Queens Beasts Series. This series includes ten designs inspired by the heraldic statues along the Moat Bridge at Hampton Court. These beasts were important symbols during the Tudor era, with King Henry VIII using them to reinforce the dynastys right to rule after the Wars of the Roses. Provident Metals now offers the 2026 British Tudor Beasts Queen’s Lion 1 oz Gold Coin.

Highlights:

  • Comes with individual flips, plastic tubes of 10 coins, or Monster Boxes of 100 coins!
  • 8th BU issue in the Tudor Beasts Series!
  • Contains 1 troy oz of .9999 pure gold in BU condition.
  • The face value of 100 Pound sterling (GBP) is fully backed by the British government.
  • On the obverse is King Charles III.
  • The reverse features the Queens Lion with the personal badge of Jane Seymour.

Every 2026 British Tudor Beasts Queen’s Lion 1 oz Gold Coin comes in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. Buyers can choose individual coins in protective flips or bulk options that include tubes of 10 coins or Monster Boxes of 100 coins.

Obverse

The obverse of the 2026 British Tudor Beasts Queen’s Lion Gold Coin carries the official portrait of King Charles III. Designed by Martin Jennings in 2022, this first portrait shows His Majesty in left-profile relief without a crown. Inscriptions include CHARLES III, DG REX FD, and 100 POUNDS.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 2026 Tudor Beasts Queen’s Lion 1 oz Gold Coin is the Queens Lion. Henry VIII used this crowned lion as a heraldic symbol to recognize Jane Seymour when she became queen consort, and the lion holds her personal badge in the design. Inscriptions read THE QUEEN’S LION, 1 OZ, FINE GOLD, 999.9, and 2026.

History

The lion was a key symbol in Tudor heraldry, especially connected to the marriage of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour. Still, the lions use in English heraldry began long before the Tudors. It dates back to the twelfth century and became one of the most important symbols in medieval heraldry. One early example comes from Geoffrey Plantagenet, Count of Anjou, who died in 1151. His tomb shows what later became well-known heraldic traditions.
