History

The Missisquoi Abenaki have lived in the Lake Champlain area for thousands of years, long before European settlement. By the time French explorers arrived in the early 17th century, they were already known as capable farmers, hunters, and traders. Their lives were later affected by major upheaval as disease, warfare, and colonial expansion, which disrupted communities. Many Abenaki groups moved north into Quebec, where some settled near the French and within Catholic mission villages such as St. Francis (Odanak).
