Obverse

History
Following the British annexation of the Transvaal in 1877, Kruger rose as one of three leaders who guided the Boer resistance alongside Piet Joubert and Marthinus Pretorius. Their leadership helped direct the First Boer War of 18801881, where Boer forces secured a decisive victory at the Battle of Majuba Hill. Their success in negotiating the Pretoria Convention of 1881 later restored self-rule to the Transvaal.
