The American Buffalo Gold Proof Coin made its first appearance in 2006 as the United States Mints initial 24-karat gold proof coin. It was introduced as a collector-focused version of the American Buffalo Gold Bullion Coin. Proof coins are struck using a more careful process, where polished planchets are individually handled and struck multiple times. This approach produces detailed designs with a frosted finish and mirrored backgrounds, giving the coin a clean and refined look. Obverse
On the obverse of the 2026-W Proof American Buffalo Gold Coin is a right-facing image of an Indigenous figure. This design is based on James Earle Frasers 1913 Buffalo Nickel artwork. Fraser created the portrait as a combination of features from three different Indigenous individuals from the early 20th century. The inscriptions here read LIBERTY, 2006, the W mint mark, and Fraser’s F initial.
Reverse
The reverse of the 2026-W Proof Buffalo 1 oz Gold Coin shows an American bison in left-profile. Designed by Fraser, the image was inspired by Black Diamond, a bison that lived at the Central Park Zoo. The animal is depicted standing on a mound with its head lowered as it grazes. Inscriptions here read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, $50, and 1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD.
History
The 2026 Proof Gold Buffalo includes dual-date inscriptions of 1776 and 2026 on the obverse, along with the US Mints America 250 Liberty Bell emblem. These details recognize the 250th anniversary of the United States. The year 2026 is also important for other US Mint series, with the American Eagle program reaching its 40th anniversary and the Gold Buffalo series celebrating 20 years.
