Obverse
President Kennedy features on the obverse of these 2022-P JFK Half Dollar Coins. Using his Presidential medal for inspiration, US Mint Chief Engraver Gilroy Roberts developed this classic effigy in haste following the sudden death of the nations 35th president. Inscriptions on the obverse field read LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, 2022. A P mintmark is shown on the obverse as well.
Reverse
A modified Presidential seal is found on the reverse of Black Ruthenium Half Dollars. The heraldic eagle in the center of the field holds both an olive branch and arrows in its talons. There is also a shield on its chest with 13 stripes to represent the original US colonies. You will find inscriptions also on the reverse reading UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and HALF DOLLAR.
History
JFK Half Dollars were first struck in 1964 and remained in circulation up until 2001. From 2002-2020, they were only produced at high premiums for collectors. But in 2021, to the joy of its fans, this iconic coin was minted for circulation once again. Prior to their existence, the Franklin Half Dollar was the prominent 50-cent piece in circulation. However, production of that coin ceased when Congress signed a bill approving a new half-dollar coin to honor the legacy of the recently fallen President Kennedy.
