History

Argor-Heraeus was founded in 1951. The company started as Argor SA and operated in Chiasso, Switzerland. In 1973, it was acquired by Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS). In 1986, UBS launched a joint venture with the German Heraeus group to create the modern refinery, and in 1988 the mint moved to a new headquarters in Mendrisio, Switzerland.
