Design

The 30 oz Silver Antique Finish Iwo Jima Statue available here depicts the moment that six US Marines raised an American flag at the peak of Mount Suribachi. After nearly a month of fierce fighting on the island of Iwo Jima, six US Marines from E Company had reached the top of Mount Suribachi with their unit and raised the American flag at the peak to boost the morale of American troops still fighting across the island, while also showing the Japanese resistance that America wasnt going to stop until the island was cleared of Imperial forces.

In the design, a single US Marine guides the flagpole into the rocky surface of Mount Suribachi as five other US Marines push the flagpole upright. As the flag moves upright, the American flag begins to unfurl and flap in the breeze.

History

The US war effort in the Pacific Theater of World War II was known as an island-hopping campaign. As the US Navy and US Marine Corps moved throughout the Pacific Theater, American forces had to take and clear one island after another to push the Japanese back toward the home islands. Iwo Jima was the last of islands before the home islands after the US had pushed the Japanese back away from Australia, cleared the Caroline Islands, retaken Guam, and fought it out with the Japanese at Tinian and Saipan. Iwo Jima was halfway between the aforementioned Mariana Islands and the home islands of Japan.
