The former sovereign currency of Italy was the Lira, adopted in 1861 and repealed in 2002 with the adoption of the Euro currency. The Lira that served as the fiat currency of Italy for more than 140 years was based on a Lire Gold Coin actually introduced in the early 19th century when Napoleon Bonaparte annexed portions of Italy. Today, you have the opportunity to get 40 Lire Italian Gold Coins online at Provident Metals.

The 40 Lire Italian Gold Coin was based on the 40 Francs Gold coin introduced by the French Empire under the rule of Napoleon Bonaparte. The 40 Lire coin was introduced in portions of modern-day northern Italy after Napoleon annexed the region and transformed the Italian Republic into the Kingdom of Italy with himself installed as the King of Italy.

Obverse

Napoleon Bonaparte is featured on the obverse of 40 Lire Italian Gold Coins. A left-profile bust of Napoleon is surrounded by a Latin legend with his title and name, while a date mark is featured at the bottom of the coin.

Reverse

An imperial eagle design is found on the reverse of the 40 Lire Italian Gold Coins. The eagle is fronted by a shield with a crowned background field. The face value of the coins is depicted on this side of the gold coins as well.

History

40 Lire Italian Gold Coins were produced sparingly in other date ranges outside of the 1807 to 1814 range, but the most common specimens remaining are those that were struck when Napoleon ruled the Kingdom of Italy. Other designs possibly featured on other issues of the 40 Lire Italian Gold Coin include the denomination with a wreath on the reverse and busts of other leaders, such as Napoleon III.

Napoleon Bonapartes Kingdom of Italy lasted for just seven years. As it was a personal relationship between the French Empire and the Italian Republic, the downfall of Napoleon resulted in the dissolution of that kingdom.
