For more than 150 years, the silver coins issued by the United States Mint contained actual silver content. Coins such as the dime, quarter, half-dollar, and dollar featured 90% silver content with 10% copper for balance. Starting in 1965, the US Mint was forced to introduce a new, durable cupro-nickel alloy to offset the rising prices of silver bullion. One of the final coins issued with actual silver content was the Eisenhower Dollar. Provident Metals currently has 40% Silver Eisenhower Dollars available to you for purchase online.
Highlights:
When you purchase a 40% Silver Eisenhower Dollar in this product listing at Provident Metals, the coins are available with individual protective plastic flips to house the specimens. Each one of the coins comes to you in circulated condition. A coin in circulated condition may show minor flaws from handling that include scuffs, blemishes, scratches, or other minor flaws as a result of use. Please bear in mind the US Mint never issued the 40% silver coins for circulation use. BU and Proof versions were issued from 1971 to 1974 with the bald eagle reverse, and in 1975 and 1976 with the special Bicentennial reverse.
Obverse
The obverse of the 40% Silver Eisenhower Dollar Coins depicts President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The 34th President of the United States of America, Eisenhower was one of a handful of American presidents to have previously enjoyed success as a military leader during the nations time of need and transitioning that popularity into time in office. Inscriptions on this face of the coin include Liberty, In God We Trust, and a date mark.
Reverse
On the reverse side of 40% Silver Eisenhower Dollar Coins is either an image of the American bald eagle landing on the moon, a nod to the Apollo 11 mission patch from Michael Collins, or the Liberty Bell in front of the moon. The former design has inscriptions of United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, and One Dollar. The same inscriptions feature on the Bicentennial strikes in 1975 and 1976, with E Pluribus Unum inscribed in the lower-right field instead of the upper-center field.
History
Eisenhower Dollars were the final coins with actual silver content in US history and one of just two 40% silver coins ever issued. The first was the Kennedy Half Dollar which debuted in 1964 with 90% silver and continued through 1970 with 40% silver. In 1971, the Eisenhower Dollar debuted as the first US silver dollar since the Peace Dollar was last struck in 1935. Though cupro-nickel coins were issued until 1978, silver versions were only available in the aforementioned date ranges of 1971-1976 as BU and Proof coins.
