Columbia was a name used by Europeans to refer to the civilizations discovered in the New World by Christopher Columbus. Her first depictions in European literature date to the 1620s. By the 1730s, she had become directly associated with the Thirteen Colonies of Britain in North America. Later, the symbol carried on as a female personification for the United States of America and would be used in literature and propaganda in the US through World War I. After the war, Columbia was replaced in the minds of Americans by Liberty.
