Known throughout the world and passage of time as Blackbeard, the worlds most famous pirate had humble beginnings. Born in England, in 1680, Edward Teach joined the Royal Navy when he was able.

It is thought that Teach served in the Royal Navy as a sailor during what was known as Queen Annes War. Teach eventually signed on as a crew member with Benjamin Hornigold on the Bahamian island of New Providence. After spending time serving with Hornigold for a year, Blackbeard embarked on his own adventures on a captured French merchant vessel he renamed Queen Annes Revenge.

Obverse

The obverse design of the 5 oz Silver Antique Blackbeard Round features the image of the pirate Blackbeard. Woven into his long locks are canon fuses. Blackbeard was known to light up the fuses while in battle, to scare off his enemies. It is said that Blackbeard captured more than 40 ships during his time sailing the high seas.

Reverse

The reverse design of the 5 oz Silver Antique Blackbeard Round features the flag from the Queen Annes Revenge, Blackbeards ship. The flag depicted a skeleton hoisting a drink in toast to the devil. Also featured on the flag was a spear shown to be piercing a heart. Legend has it that just the sight of Blackbeards flag flying high above the Queen Annes Revenge was enough to lead some ships to flee or surrender.
