Design

On the obverse of the Silver Aztec Calendar Bar, the full Sun Stone is presented with careful detail. At the center is Tonatiuh, the sun god, surrounded by four panels symbolizing previous eras in Aztec cosmology. History

The Aztec Sun Stone was rediscovered on December 17, 1790, during restoration efforts at the Metropolitan Cathedral in Mexico Citys Zcalo. While working in the plaza, laborers uncovered the massive stone disc, bringing it back into public awareness. Scholars and officials quickly realized its cultural importance. Initially displayed at the cathedral, the stone was later relocated to a museum environment where it could be preserved and studied.
