The Aztec Sun Stone is one of the most recognizable relics from ancient history. Its intricate patterns and symbolic meaning have made it a popular design for modern bullion rounds. Today, these designs are carefully recreated on precious metals, offering collectors a chance to own a piece inspired by this historic artifact. Struck in silver, these rounds provide both bullion value and a connection to the culture of the Aztec Empire. Right now, 5 oz Silver Aztec Calendar Rounds from SilverTowne are available online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
These 5 oz Silver Aztec Calendar Rounds are packaged in protective plastic flips. As the largest size in this series, the 5 oz round offers a substantial silver option, with only larger bars exceeding it in overall size. Collectors can also find smaller fractional-ounce rounds and a copper version in the same design.
Obverse
On the obverse of Silver Aztec Calendar Rounds is the detailed Sun Stone image. The original carving was made from a single piece of basalt and reflects both artistic ability and the Aztec understanding of time. At the center is Tonatiuh, the sun god, shown with a blade-like tongue connected to ritual symbolism. Around him are four panels representing previous world ages, followed by a ring displaying the twenty day symbols of the Aztec calendar. The design continues outward with decorative patterns and finishes with two fire serpents encircling the edge.
Reverse
The reverse of the 5 oz Silver Aztec Calendar Round features a right-facing portrait of Emperor Cuauhtemoc. He became the final leader of the Aztec Empire in 1520 and was related to Moctezuma II. During the Spanish conquest led by Hernan Cortes, Cuauhtemoc oversaw the defense of Tenochtitlan. Despite his efforts, the city fell in 1521. He was captured shortly after and executed in 1525. Inscriptions here read FIVE TROY OUNCES and 999 FINE SILVER.
History
Following the fall of Tenochtitln, Spanish forces dismantled much of the citys religious and political center while constructing Mexico City on top of it. Many important objects were destroyed or buried during this process. The Sun Stone, due to its size, was buried and remained hidden for centuries before being rediscovered.
