Design

Prior to the creation of the FIFA World Cup Trophy, the Jules Rimet Trophy was awarded to the winner of each tournament. Rimet was the president of FIFA from 1921 to 1954 and was the chief instigator behind the creation of the World Cup tournament. However, Rimet included a decree in 1930 that any team who took home 3 championships could also take home the trophy for good. After a lengthy submission process that included 53 designs, FIFA ultimately chose the work of Italian artist Silvio Gazzaniga. His celebrated design will continue to be used until 2042, when a new trophy will be commissioned.
