Design

In the obverse design of the 5 oz Silver Pony Bar from SilverTowne, the mint features the image of a Pony Express rider. Shown in left-profile relief, this rider races across the bar as he pushes his steed to the limit to quickly get to his destination. Inscriptions on this field include 5 OZ, FINE SILVER, 999, and the SilverTowne pickax mint mark. For the reverse field, the mint leaves the bar blank.

History

The Pony Express was established in April 1860 as a means of quickly delivering messages to and from California, which was then a new and growing US state. This system came about in an era before the transcontinental railroad connected the Easter and Western United States. It also preceded the transcontinental telegraph, though by just a few months.

The system relied on a total of 190, initially 186, stations spread across a route from Missouri to California. Riders would cover 10-mile stretches along the route before switching out with a new rider and horse. The combined team could haul 40 pounds of mail in pouches on the horse.
