Few figures in human history, real or mythological, have represented both true beauty at one point and absolute hideousness at another. Medusa is one such figure. Originally a golden-haired beauty who was a priestess of Athena, Medusa had taken a vow to remain celibate. However, she was seduced by the god of the sea, Poseidon, and crucially forgot her vows in the process. The result was a tragic transformation into a beast capable of turning men to stone with a single glance.

Obverse

History

Medusa was one of the three gorgon sisters. At the time of her death at the hands of Perseus, Medusa was pregnant by Poseidon and her body spawned Pegasus, the winged horse, and Chrysaor. Perseus gave Medusas head to Athena for her to mount on her shield as a symbol warning others who would cross the goddess.
