Medusa is one of the most talked-about figures from Ancient Greek mythology. The once-beautiful maiden was transformed into a hideous beast by the goddess Athena for slipping on her vow to be celibate and doing so inside of a temple devoted to the goddess. Today, you have the chance to get 5 oz Silver Medusa Rounds with proof-like visuals online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Few figures in human history, real or mythological, have represented both true beauty at one point and absolute hideousness at another. Medusa is one such figure. Originally a golden-haired beauty who was a priestess of Athena, Medusa had taken a vow to remain celibate. However, she was seduced by the god of the sea, Poseidon, and crucially forgot her vows in the process. The result was a tragic transformation into a beast capable of turning men to stone with a single glance.
Obverse
On the obverse side of 5 oz Silver Medusa Rounds is a depiction of the creature Medusa was transformed into by Athena. With a head of snakes, green skin, and the body of a monster, all it took was a single glance to turn a man to stone. Medusa was eventually defeated by Perseus using the reflection of her figure in his shield to avoid looking her in the eyes as he moved in for the kill.
Reverse
The reverse face of 5 oz Silver Medusa Rounds includes the Anonymous Mint logo. The mint logo is inspired by the heraldic eagle of the United States, with the wise owl replacing the eagle in front-facing relief. The owl clutches three arrows in its talons and wears the crown of the Anonymous Mint on its head. Above the seal are 13 stars arranged in three rows, one each of six stars, four stars, and three stars. Below the seal, inscriptions of 5 Ounce .999 Fine Silver and Anonymous Mint are featured.
History
Medusa was one of the three gorgon sisters. At the time of her death at the hands of Perseus, Medusa was pregnant by Poseidon and her body spawned Pegasus, the winged horse, and Chrysaor. Perseus gave Medusas head to Athena for her to mount on her shield as a symbol warning others who would cross the goddess.
