The concept behind the British Gold Sovereign is one of the oldest coining concepts still in use today. During the reign of King Henry VII, the English sovereign was introduced as a circulation gold coin by the first Tudor monarch. It was struck regularly, though in different sizes, weights, and values, through 1603 when King James I of England halted the series. In 1817, King George III revived the coins with a similar design concept. Provident Metals now offers 5 Pound British Gold Sovereigns for you to purchase online.
Highlights:
When you purchase the 5 Pound British Gold Sovereign in this product listing, you will receive your coin in a protective plastic flip. The 5 Pound version of the Gold Sovereign is not as highly produced as others. The standard Gold Sovereign is a coin with a nominal value of 1 Pound sterling. Other denominations, such as these 5 Pound coins, are available but not with the same mintage levels.
Obverse
On the obverse side of the 5 Pound British Gold Sovereign is a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty has featured on the modern 5 Pound British Gold Sovereigns since her reign officially began in 1953. The Queen has been depicted on the obverse of British coins since that time in five different reliefs. The most common are perhaps the Arnold Machin design from 1965-1983 and the Ian Rank-Broadley image from 1998 to 2015. However, these effigies are dependent upon date mark and include others such as the Raphael Maklouf portrait from 1984-1997 and the Jody Clark portrait in use as of 2016.
Reverse
The reverse face of the 5 Pound British Gold Sovereigns includes an image that was designed back in 1817 when the modern Gold Sovereign was introduced. Benedetto Pistrucci developed an image of St. George on horseback slaying a dragon. This design has been in use on the series since that time with the exception of a period of time during the reign of Queen Victoria.
History
The Gold Sovereign is so-named because it features a bust on the obverse of the sovereign monarch of England. The former English Sovereign (1489-1603) used the same design concept, depicting the reigning monarch on the obverse of the coin with varying reverse designs often chosen by the monarch of that era. The modern Gold Sovereign also changes obverse designs to match the reigning monarch, but maintains the St. George design on the reverse.
