Design
The 50 Arizona Goldback Gold Note shows the female allegory of Curiosity at work within Lowell Observatory. On February 18, 1930, a 23-year-old astronomer named Clyde Tombaugh discovered a faint moving object while comparing photographic plates taken with the observatorys 13-inch telescope. After several weeks of review, Lowell Observatory announced on March 13, 1930Percival Lowells 75th birthdaythe discovery of Pluto, named by an 11-year-old girl in England after the Roman god of the underworld.
History
Lowell Observatory was founded in 1894 by Boston-born astronomer Percival Lowell on a forested hill overlooking Flagstaff. The observatory was built to study Mars and search for signs of intelligent life believed to exist there. While Lowells canal theory was later disproven, his observatory became an important research center thanks to its locations ideal conditionshigh altitude, dark skies, and clear airmaking it one of the nations leading institutions for planetary studies.
