History

The Royal Mint is one of the oldest minting institutions in the world today. During the reign of Alfred the Great, Britain had roughly 30 mints producing various types of coinage. But after the Norman Conquest, that number dwindled significantly, and London became the central producer of British coinage. The Royal Mint has changed locations several times, most recently from Tower Hill in London to Llantrisant in Wales.
