History

New Hampshire is the fifth-smallest US state by area and 10^th smallest by population. The first state to break away from Great Britain by forming its own independent government, New Hampshire was also the first to write up its own constitution and was the ninth state to ratify the US Constitution after the Americans defeated Britain in the Revolutionary War.

The Pine Tree Flag depicted in the obverse design is also sometimes known as the Tree Flag. Historically, it featured the phrase An Appeal to Heaven more commonly, but An Appeal to God was also used. The design came from Colonel Joseph reed, General George Washingtons secretary. It was Col. Reed who suggested its use to Washington on ships that the Commander-in-Chief commissioned for the Continental Navy.
