History
Adopted in 1879, the bolivar is considered Venezuelas official currency. The coin is named after Simon Bolivar, a military leader who lived from 1783 until 1830. Bolivar is known for guiding a number of South American countries, including Venezuela, to independence. Nicknamed El Libertador, Boliver served as both a colonel and a diplomat during Venezuelas War for Independence.
