The obverse features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty stepping out from a rising sun. She holds out a torch in one hand, while the other clutches an olive branch. The inscription “LIBERTY” sits within a ring of stars, and the year of issue can be found written out in Roman numerals.
The reverse, designed by Miley Busiek, features a male Bald Eagle flying back to his nested family with an olive branch in his talon. Inscriptions of “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” are paired with the coin’s weight, purity, and denomination.
In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt admired the beauty of ancient coins at the Smithsonian Institute and commissioned Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign America’s gold coinage based on ancient coins. Saint-Gaudens created an iconic design that drew inspiration from Roman art, with the date expressed in Roman numerals.
However, the length of the Roman numeral date was quite long and had to be compressed to fit on Gold Eagles, especially the fractional weights. Beginning in 1992, the US Mint switched the Gold Eagle dates to Arabic numerals.
Because Gold Eagles were produced with Roman numeral dates for six years–from 1986 to 1991–and then phased over to Arabic numerals, these early Roman numeral Gold Eagles have become popular among numismatists and collectors. This set includes a complete date run (one of each) of these Roman numeral Gold Eagles, graded and holdered by the NGC with a near perfect grade. This is a unique set and quantities are limited.
All six coins come sealed in individual plastic holders. Each set contains one coin from each date in the Roman numeral run of Gold Eagles.
