Though dragons have long been present in stories from various cultures, modern scientists believe that the dragon, like other mythical beasts, is the result of misidentification. These scientists believe that it was likely a larger, now-extinct ancestor of the crocodile as the beasts have a similar appearance and were encountered in swampy regions.
