Goldbacks are privately issued notes designed to operate as a voluntary local currency. Each note is produced by sealing a thin layer of 24-karat gold between durable sheets of polyester film, creating a flexible note that contains a measurable amount of real gold. The notes feature intricate designs and precise fractional gold content, offering a modern approach to using gold in everyday transactions. The idea began in Utah and has gradually expanded into additional states, pairing the lasting value of gold with a practical format for exchange. The newest series introduces the Idaho Goldback with designs reflecting the history and culture of the state. Right now, 9 Piece Idaho Goldback Gold Note Sets are available at Provident Metals.

  • Arrives with individual sleeves for each note!
  • Includes all 9 denominations in the Idaho Goldback Series!
  • Unique designs for each denomination!

Design History

The Idaho Goldbacks each present a different design that reflects an aspect of Idahos past. Long before European exploration reached the area, the land that would later become Idaho was home to many Indigenous nations, including the Nez Perce, Shoshone, Bannock, Coeur d’Alene, Pend d’Oreilles, and Northern Paiute. These communities lived across the regions mountains, rivers, and plains, relying on generations of knowledge about the land and its resources. American exploration increased with the arrival of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1805. In the decades that followed, fur traders, Christian missionaries, and emigrant settlers traveled through the region along the Oregon Trail during the 1840s, bringing major changes to Indigenous communities.
