The Walking Liberty Half Dollar is considered by many to be the most beautiful half dollar coin ever minted. Its designer, Adolph A. Weinman, was a former student of the great sculptor Augustus Saint-Gauden, and his winning design for the Walking Liberty Half Dollar ushered in a new and vital era in American coinage.
The obverse of the coin, from which it takes its name, depicts Lady Liberty striding confidently toward a rising sun, draped in the security of the American flag, and carrying laurel and oak branches that symbolize American civic and military power. The reverse of the coin features a magnificent bald eagle, perched upon a mountain crag and spreading its wings in a display of power, above a sapling of mountain pine, symbolic of a young America growing strong from a cleft in the rock.
Walking Liberty Half Dollars were minted from 1917 through 1947 in Philadelphia (no mintmark), San Francisco (“S” mintmark), and Denver (“D”), are composed of .90% silver yielding .36169 troy ounces of pure silver per coin, and measure 30.6mm in diameter.
These coins may show signs of aging or wear, though the date should still be decipherable.
