American Eagle Platinum Coins debuted in 1997 with designs that set it apart from the silver and gold versions of the American Eagle. While the latter two coin programs revived historic US coin designs from earlier in the 20th century, US Mint engraver John Mercanti was put to work designing a modern vision of Liberty to use on the obverse of the coins. His design has featured on the obverse of the bullion coin since 1997 and on the obverse of the proof coin from 1997 to 2017.

Obverse

For the obverse design field, the American Eagle 1/4 oz Platinum Coin features a depiction of the face of the Statue of Liberty. This design was created specifically for the American Eagle Platinum Series by John Mercanti who would go on to serve as the 12th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 2006 to 2010 when he retired.

Reverse

In the reverse design element, Thomas D. Rogers depicts an American bald eagle soaring across the American Eagle Platinum Coin. Rogers was a longtime US Mint engraver and artist, and his design of the American bald eagle is special in this series. It features every year on these bullion versions of the coin, but is also the only design to feature twice on the reverse of proof coins in the American Eagle Platinum Series.

History

American Eagle Platinum Coins launched in 1997 with 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz coins for the Brilliant Uncirculated version and the Proof version. In both versions, the fractional-ounce coins were produced through 2008 and then suspended for good. The 1 oz BU coin was suspended from 2009 to 2013, struck in 2014, not in 2015, and resumed in 2016.

Ordering

These American Eagle 1/4 oz Platinum Coins are Mint State 69 specimens. Each one has full, original mint luster with a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. Those flaws are limited in nature to minuscule contact marks or hairlines and limited in scope to the areas outside of the primary focal points of the coin. Please keep in mind date marks are all random. We do not guarantee individual date marks and you may get several matching dates when buying multiples.
