Proof American Eagle Platinum Coins use a fresh reverse design each year. This was the case from 1997 to 2017, with only the debut 1997 and 20th anniversary 2017 coins sharing a design element. The obverse design was changed for the first time in 2018, but the fractional-ounce coins were no longer available by that time.

Obverse

John Mercanti created the image of the Statue of Liberty featured on the obverse of Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Platinum coins. This design focuses on the face of the Statue of Liberty as she holds her torch high overhead and gazes into the future.

Reverse

Design elements on the reverse of the Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Platinum Coins vary from one year to the next. The Vistas of Liberty Series, for example, featured new designs of the American bald eagle flying over different regions of the country each year.

History

American Eagle Platinum Coins debuted in 1997 with three fractional-ounce coins available in the bullion and proof versions. The coins in the fractional-ounce weights were halted in both the bullion and proof ranges in 2008 following decreasing demand for platinum.
