On July 16, 1969, the astronauts of NASAs Apollo 11 mission launched from Merritt Island, Florida, with a singular mission in mind: land on the Moon. The eight-day mission sent a three-man crew to a lunar orbit, with two of the three men becoming the first humans in history to land on another celestial body before returning safely back to Earth. Today, you have the opportunity to get Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Rounds online from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with an individual protective capsule, a display stand, and a Certificate of Authenticity!
  • Replicates the visuals of a 1969 space-flown medallion!
  • Boasts a clad layer of 24-karat gold!
  • On the obverse of the round is the Apollo 11 mission patch.
  • The reverse features the names of the astronauts and the important dates of the mission.

The astronauts of the Apollo 11 mission included commander Neil Armstrong, lunar lander pilot Buzz Aldrin, and command module pilot Michael Collins. Of the three men, only Armstrong and Aldrin would eventually set foot on the Moon. Collins remained behind in orbit around the Moon in the command module. After an eight-day mission, all three men splashed down in the South Pacific where the US Navy retrieved the crew and their capsule.

Obverse

The reverse side of the Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Round comes with the names of the crew and the important dates in the missions history. Along the top rim of the design element are the last names of Armstrong, Collins, Aldrin. In the center are the dates of launched, landed, and returned. These dates include July 16, 1969, July 20, 1969, and July 24, 1969.

History

The Apollo 11 mission from NASA included medallions made of sterling silver by the Robbins Company of Attleboro, Massachusetts. The company made several medallions for crews to take into space to commemorate the mission starting with Apollo 1 and running consecutively through the Apollo 7-17 missions and concluding with the Apollo Soyuz mission in 1975.
