World War II included wide-spread fighting as nearly every continent saw some sort of war. American troops worked with Australian forces to secure a victory in the Pacific. To honor this partnership, the Perth Mint released a series of silver and gold coins in 2013. Right now, you can purchase the Australian Battle of the Coral Sea 1/10 oz Gold Coin.

Highlights:

  • Part of the War in the Pacific Series!
  • Honors both American and Australian troops from WWII!
  • Ships in individual flips!
  • Each coin contains 1/10 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold.
  • Granted a face value of $15 (AUD) by the Australian government.
  • Obverse image features Queen Elizabeth II.
  • Reverse design features the flags of both countries.
  • Please bear in mind that you may receive coins with matching or varied date marks when buying several.

The War in the Pacific fully began during World War II after the Japanese attacked the U.S. Naval Station at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The American naval fleet was destroyed, but the aircraft carriers survived the attack as they had been out on maneuvers when the Japanese attacked.

The attack on Pearl Harbor spurred four years of warfare, and the United States and its Allies fought back against the Japanese Imperial Navy. In what is now known as an island-hopping campaign, the American troops worked with the Australians during some of the bloodiest war battles to regain control over countless island chains.

Obverse

On the obverse of each coin is the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The image was designed in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley. Also on the obverse, you will see the nation of issue, year of issue, Her Majestys name, and the weight, purity, metal content, and face value of the coin.

Reverse

The reverse showcases the Australian and United States flags with an eagle perched in the center of the coin. An exact replica of the eagle can also be found at a memorial in Canberra, Australias federal capital.

History

As the oldest operating minting facility in Australia, the Perth Mint operates separately from the Australian government. The Royal Australian Mint creates the currency for the country. However, the Perth Mint is owned by the state of Western Australia. The Perth Mint opened in 1898 as the third and final Royal Mint facility in the country.
