The Battle of the Coral Sea is remembered as one of the most significant in the Pacific Theater during World War II. As the Japanese sought to extend their influence into the South Pacific, the US Navy sent two carrier task forces and a joint Australian-American cruiser fleet to defend the area and try to push back the Japanese. The success of the Australian-American joint endeavor is remembered on a series of coins from the Perth Mint. Right now, you can buy the Australian Battle of the Coral Sea 1/4 oz Gold Coin from Provident Metals.
Your purchase of Australian Battle of the Coral Sea 1/4 oz Gold Coins comes with an individual protective plastic flip from the Perth Mint. Individual coins in this release are available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition and represent one of the three issues to mark the battle. The Perth Mint also issued 1/10 oz gold and 1/2 oz silver coins with this design.
The obverse face of the Australian Battle of the Coral Sea 1/4 oz Gold Coins bears the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is depicted here in right-profile relief in a 1998 design created by Ian Rank-Broadley. The image was the fourth-generation on British coins and fifth-generation on Australian and Commonwealth coins.
On the reverse side of Australian Battle of the Coral Sea 1/4 oz Gold Coins The obverse face of Australian Battle of the Coral Sea 1/4 oz Gold Coins features the image of a light cruiser sailing through the waters of the South Pacific. The background contains elements representing the joint Australian-American cruiser task force. The Stars and Stripes of the United States is in the background on the right, with the Southern Cross constellation from the Australian flag in the background on the left. Inscriptions include Battle of the Coral Sea above and War in the Pacific 1941-45 at the bottom.
The Battle of the Coral Sea was a tactical victory for Japan in terms of ships destroyed or lost to damage, but the Australian-American offensive was a strategic victory for the Allies in that it marked the first time a Japanese offensive was checked. The Japanese were unable to use major fleet carriers from this battle two months later at the Battle of Midway, a major American victory that turned the tide of the war.
