When it comes to legal tender currency, monetary units around the world often take the same shapes. Base metal currency is produced as circular coins, while paper banknotes are issued in varying rectangular sizes. The Perth Mint has a new version of legal tender coins for Australia that are square. Today, you have the chance to get Australian Legal Tender 1/10 oz Gold Units online from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with individual capsules or clamshell rolls of 10 gold units!
  • Issued in 2016!
  • Contains 1/10 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold.
  • The face value of $15 (AUD) is backed by Australia.
  • Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse.
  • Global imagery with the United States and Australia depicted.

In 1966, Australia issued its first native legal tender currency as part of its long federation movement to separate from direct British rule. Prior to 1966, Australia used the Pound sterling currency of the United Kingdom as a part of the British Empire. The Currency Act of 1965 established the Royal Australian Mint and finalized decimalization. The result was the end of the Pound, shilling, and pence units of the United Kingdom and the debut of the new Australian dollar (AUD).

Obverse

Queen Elizabeth II features on the obverse side of the 1/10 oz Gold Australian Legal Tender Unit. This square gold coins from the Perth Mint come with the popular right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This design was created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley for the Royal Mint of England and featured widely throughout the Commonwealth on coins from England to Australia, New Zealand, Tuvalu, and Niue. Inscriptions around this bust of the Queen include Elizabeth II, Australia, 1/10 oz 9999 Gold, 2016, and 15 Dollars.

Reverse

A globe design is showcased on the reverse of 1/10 oz Gold Australian Legal Tender Unit. The globe design includes the major latitude and longitude lines of the planet with depictions of just two nations. In the Northern Hemisphere region is the United States of America, while in the Southern Hemisphere is the Commonwealth of Australia. These gold units have a square shape with rounded corners and reeded edges.

History

The new Australian Legal Tender Gold Unit is a product of the Perth Mint. Founded in 1899, the Perth Mint was originally destined to serve as a third branch facility of the Royal Mint of England in Australia. Just three years after its opening, Australia began its federation process. The Perth Mint is the only other operating mint in Australia following the closure of the Sydney Mint and Melbourne Mint, and the opening of the Royal Australian Mint. The Perth Mint is owned by the state government of Western Australia.
