Your purchase of a British Britannia 1 oz Gold Coin in this listing comes with a Mint State 69 certification. Examples of acceptable flaws at this level are limited to minuscule contact marks or hairlines and must be located outside of the primary focal points of the coin.

Obverse

The obverse of British Britannia 1 oz Gold Coins always features an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. During the production run of the Britannia Gold Coins, three effigies of the Queen have featured on the coins. Raphael Makloufs ornate third-generation design appears on date marks of 1987 to 1997. The Ian Rank-Broadley fourth-generation design is the most common to date featuring on coins dated 1998 to 2015. All coins dated 2016 and later have Jody Clarks fifth-generation portrait of Her Majesty.

Reverse

On the reverse of British Britannia 1 oz Gold Coins is the Philip Nathan design of Britannia. Used on all coins in the series since 1987, it depicts a powerful female personification of Britain standing along a coastline with the Union Jack-emblazoned shield at her side and a trident in the other hand to give her control over the seas.

History

British Britannia Gold Coins were initially introduced in 1987 with 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz coins available in 22-karat gold. From 1987 to 1989, the Royal Mint used 91.67% gold content per coin with the remaining alloy made of copper. From 1990 to 2012, the remaining alloy was silver. Since 2013, all British Britannia Gold Coins have 24-karat gold content.
