  • Australian Numismatics at Provident Metals

The Perth Mint is well-known for its array of annual BU coin programs. However, the popular mint also creates several numismatic coins for investors and collectors. These can range from proof strikes, colorized coins, high-relief products, and much more. Learn more about Australian Numismatics right here, at Provident Metals.

    Tuvalu Silver Coins

Many of the numismatic coins backed by Tuvalu, were struck by the Perth Mint. The Perth Mint makes it easily identifiable which of these Tuvalu Silver Coins were struck by the Perth Mint, just look for the “P” mint mark on the reverse of the coin.

    • Baby Lunar Series: These proof-colorized coins showcase animals of the Chinese zodiac, in baby form. Each animal has a colorized lacquer applied to it. Each coin contains 1/2 Troy oz of .9999 pure silver.
    • James Bond Coins: James Bond coins, such as their Live and Let Die Coin, are also struck by the Perth Mint. Many of their James Bond anniversary releases are proof-colorized strikes.

Types of Numismatic Coins from the Perth Mint

    • Gilded: The Perth Mint will create gilded coins for many of their BU releases. These coins have a thin layer of 24-karat gold applied to typically just the reverse.
    • High-Relief Proof: These coins are struck using intense pressure to create greater visual depth and give each coin a 3D look and feel.
    • Proof-Colorized: These proof strikes are given a colorized lacquer on the reverse to give color to the subject matter on the reverse side.

    Australian Numismatics

Many of the Perth Mint’s BU coin programs, also have a proof colorized version. Some popular series that include numismatic options are the following:

    • Emu Series: The Perth Mint releases Emu coins. The bird is seen on the reverse in proof colorized form. The 2023 issue is available in a clear display case with a mintage of just 2,500.
    • Kangaroo, Koala, and Kookaburra Coins: The Perth Mint is well-known for its array of Kangaroo, Kookaburra, and Koala Silver Coins. Proof colorized strikes are released with every issue as well as other unique strikes, such as gilded coins.
    • Lunar Series: The Perth Mint’s Lunar Series is one of the most popular in the world. The Perth Mint creates a multitude of unique strikes for these coins such as proof colorized, gilded, and even proof sets.
    • Quokka Series: Issued annually since 2020, the Perth Mint offers a series of Quokka coins. Every issue has a proof colorized version which shows the animal in color. These coins arrive in a clear display case with a Certificate of Authenticity. Each release has a mintage of just 5,000.
    • Wombat Series: Issued annually since 2021, the Perth Mint has a series of Wombat coins, showcasing the creature on the reverse in full color. These coins have a mintage of 2,500 and arrive in a presentation card from the mint.

Obverse Portraits of Australian Numismatic Coins

The Perth Mint uses the effigy of the reigning British monarch on the obverse of their coins. Over the years, this has included many unique designs.

    • Raphael Maklouf’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II: 1985-1997.
    • Ian Rank-Broadley’s depiction of Queen Elizabeth II: 1998-2017/18.
    • Jody Clark’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II: 2017/18-2023 (still used on 2024 Lunar Series.)
    • Dan Thorne’s bust of King Charles III: 2024-Present.
