Obverse

On the obverse face of Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins, the Royal Canadian Mint has used a total of three different busts of Queen Elizabeth II. From 1979 to 1989, the Arnold Machin second-generation effigy of the Queen at the age of 39 was featured on the coins. From 1990 to 2004, the first design from a Canadian artist appeared in the Dora de Pedery-Hunt bust of the Queen at the age of 64. The most recent design is the 2005 image from Susanna Blunt that shows the Queen at the age of 79 without a crown on her head.

Reverse

The reverse field of the Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Coins includes the sugar maple leaf. This iconic design was created in 1979 by Walter Ott for use on this series and continues in use on the coin, as well as all the silver, platinum, and palladium versions of the coin.

History

Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Coins were originally available only in 1 oz gold from 1979 to November 1982, with those coins boasting .999 pure gold content. In 1982, the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins were added and the gold purity was increased to .9999 pure content. Subsequent releases in the 1990s saw a 1/2 oz and 1/20 oz gold coin added to the series. The most recent is the 2014 release of the 1 Gram gold coin.
