Canadian Lunar Series at Provident Metals

Most mints, such as the Perth Mint, and the Royal Mint, issue Lunar-themed coins coinciding with the Chinese zodiac. These coins showcase the reigning British monarch on the obverse, with a unique design on the reverse. In 2010, the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) started their own series of Lunar-themed coins. Learn more about the Canadian Lunar Series, right here at Provident Metals.

Lunar Series

The RCM started this series in 2010 with the Year of the Tiger. Coins were issued annually in weights such as 1 oz, and 1/2 oz weight made of .9999 pure silver. Coins were issued in various strikes such as proof, BU, and colorized. Each strike and size had a corresponding mintage cap and face value ranging from $5 to $15 (CAD). Additionally, the RCM issued a Lunar Lotus series as well with coins arriving in the shape of a lotus flower.

Notably, each unique coin had a unique design to go along with it. For example, the reverse design on the 1 oz proof release differed from that of the 1/2 oz BU issue.

Lunar Privy Coins

Part of the well-known Canadian Maple Leaf Silver series, every year starting in 1998, the RCM would issue Maple Leaf coins with a special privy mark for the Chinese zodiac. This series started in 1998 with the Year of the Tiger. From 1998 to 2004 the mintage was set at 25,000 for each issue. The 2005 release had a mintage of 15,000, while the 2006 issue had a mintage cap of just 10,000. The final 3 years from 2007 to 2009 had mintages of 8,000.

These privy coins returned in 2012 and ran until 2023. Coins issued from 2014-2023 were reverse-proof strikes.
