From 1982 to 2015, the Chinese Mint offered its Chinese Panda Gold Coins in five weights. 1982 saw the introduction of 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold coins. A fifth coin, the 1/20 oz gold coin, was launched in 1983. Starting in 2016, each of these coins transitioned to weights in Grams as the official unit of measure. The 1/20 oz gold coin became the Chinese Panda 1 Gram Gold coin.

Obverse

The Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests is featured on the obverse of the Chinese Panda 1 Gram Gold Coins each year. This design has been on the reverse every year since the start of the collection and is accompanied by the nation of issue inscription in Mandarin and the date mark.

Reverse

Giant Pandas are synonymous with the Peoples Republic of China and act as an unofficial mascot of the nation. The Giant Panda features on the reverse of all Chinese Panda 1 Gram Gold coins and is the source of the name for the bullion series. This side of the coin has a new design element every year, which helps to generate interest in the series from one year to the next.

History

The transition from Troy ounces to Grams meant some small changes for each of the coins. The 1/20 oz Gold Coin underwent some of the more drastic changes in appearance to become the 1 Gram coin. Its overall weight was 1.5552 Grams as a 1/20 oz coin, but dropped to a flat 1 Gram in 2016. More drastic was the change in diameter. The 1/20 oz gold coin had a diameter of 13.92 MM, while the 1 Gram coin has a diameter of just 10 MM.

Ordering

These Chinese Panda 1 Gram Gold Coins are available in Mint State 69 condition. Coins in this condition have full, original mint luster with a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. Those flaws are located outside the primary focal points of the coin and include only minuscule contact marks or hairlines.
