From 1982 to 2015, the Chinese Mint produced the Chinese Panda Gold Coins in five weights with Troy oz as the options for investors. These included 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz coins starting in 1982, and a 1/20 oz gold coin starting in 1983. In 2016, all five coins were swapped over to Grams with the weights changing to 30 Gram, 15 Gram, 8 Gram, 3 Gram, and 1 Gram options.

Obverse

On the obverse side of Chinese Panda 1 Gram Gold Coins is an image of the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. The central structure in the Temple of Heaven Complex, the building is a Taoist religious site that emperors and everyday citizens alike would go to in order to pray for rains and bountiful harvests.

Reverse

The reverse field of the Chinese Panda 1 Gram Gold Coin includes a changing annual design. While the Giant Panda is always featured on this side, exactly how it is depicted is different each year. Since the 2016 transition to Grams, the series has never reproduced an image. However, the 2002 coin did replicate a design from the 2001 release.

History

The shift in the Chinese Panda coins from Troy oz to Grams was monumental. While other coin programs have offered varying weights that include some Gram options, the Chinese Panda Series was the first to transition all of its coins to these weights.
