Indian Head Buffalo Nickels
We offer coin collectors an affordable way to purchase Buffalo Nickels at unbelievably low prices.
Produced by the United States Mint from 1913-1938, Indian Head Buffalo Nickels are among the most popular American coins ever circulated. Provident Metals carries Buffalo Nickels in a variety of conditions, including lightly circulated, cull batches, 40-count rolls and more.
A simple, affordable way to add copper to your portfolio, the historical Indian Head Nickel was designed by sculptor James Earle Fraser in celebration of the American West in an era of profound nostalgia for the disappearing frontier.
Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, Indian Head coins weigh .1615 troy ounces, and have a diameter of 21.2 mm. The obverse of each nickel features the profile of an American Indian, believed to be the combination of three famous chiefs: Iron Tail of the Lakota Sioux, Big Tree of the Kiowa and Two Moons of the Cheyenne.
The reverse of each Buffalo Nickel was said to be inspired by Black Diamond, a 1,550 pound North American Bison who lived at the Central Park Menagerie at the time of Fraser’s design.
Incredibly popular with the public, the Indian Head Nickel enjoys a singular place in United States coinage history. A former student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Fraser was overwhelmingly successful in capturing the aura of the Great Wild West.
The Buffalo Nickel allows investors to own copper as well as a piece of American history. Browse our product descriptions for availability, conditions, dates of issue and more. By using our secure online ordering system, you’ll have your Indian Head nickels in no time.
