United States Mint Sets

US Mint Sets offer a unique way to invest in numismatic and precious metals value.

Whether you are interested in purchasing mint sets for their value in bullion or for the pleasure of owning complete sets of each coin produced in a specific year, Provident Metals offers a wide array of specially packaged Mint Sets. All sets are comprised of brilliant, uncirculated business-strike coins produced by the United States Mint. As the title implies, these are coins in mint-state, never intended for general circulation though they could be used as legal tender. As specially packaged sets, they will arrive to you in their original mint packaging. We offer early mint sets from 1947 to 1964, sets from 1968 to 1998, and modern mint sets from 1999 to present. We also have special mints sets produced to commemorate important occasions.
A United States Mint Set is generally a set of business-strike coins specially packaged to include one each of every coin issued by the United States Treasury for a specified year. Occasionally, United States Mint Sets are created to commemorate an important event such as the American Bicentennial in 1976 when a unique set of only three coins was produced in 45% silver bullion for the occasion. Since 1947 the U.S. mint has produced mint sets nearly every year, but there is sometimes some confusion over the term. A mint set is distinct from a proof set because of the striking process. A proof set is created by unique treatment of the dies during the striking process and is comprised of coins that are not designed for the purpose of general circulation because they are more valuable than their stated denominations. Therefore, proof sets are produced primarily for collectors and investors. Mint sets, on the other hand, though they are often collected, are comprised of coins that were designed for general circulation using ordinary striking procedures. Mint sets are specially packaged, however, and have never been introduced into general circulation for the use of purchasing. Therefore, the coins remain protected in their brilliant, “mint state.” Numismatics are often interested in mint sets from specific years when production of coins was limited, for example, or a rare error in production occurred in one of the coins in that set. In fact, regular issue coins in high grade (excellent condition) are sometimes more valuable than their proof-struck counterparts. Since each coin in a mint set is in mint condition, coins in a mint set are often worth far more than their stated denominations.
