Christopher Columbus graces the obverse, along with the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and COLUMBIAN HALF DOLLAR.
The Santa Maria — the largest ship used by Columbus — is featured on the reverse, placed above two hemispheres and the year 1492 (when Columbus sailed the ocean blue). WORLD’S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION, the date and CHICAGO are inscribed.
The obverse and reverse designs were concepted by Olin Levi Warner, but Charles E. Barber modified them to complete the artwork.
Columbian Exposition Silver Dollars were created to raise money for the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893. Dates on all coins will be either 1892 or 1893.
