The hobo nickel is an artform in which the design of small-denomination coins is modified. This art form dates back to the 1750s, but increased in popularity in the early 1900s with the introduction of Fraser’s Buffalo Nickel. MrThe has sculpted 5 hobo nickel designs on 1 oz silver buffalo rounds using a combination of modern tools and classical techniques. Each design is available as a 1 oz proof-like round, 1 oz antiqued round, and 5 oz antiqued round.

The obverse of this 1 oz silver round features the profile of the traditional roaming fisherman. The fisherman wears a woolen stocking cap and turtleneck sweater, and is smoking a cigarette. This round also features rope-like design around the rim, and the inscriptions “LIBERTY”, and “1937”. This coin was sculpted over two days at the Hobo Nickel booth at the 2012 FUN show in Orlando.

The reverse of this 1 ounce coin depicts a fisherman relaxing on a peer with his fishing line cast into a lake; hills rise in the background. The reverse also carries the engravings “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, and “FIVE CENTS”.

The hobo nickels also feature an edge mark of the coin number.

Each one of these coins was designed by Paolo Curcio, known as MrThe in the sculpting world. MrThe is a classically trained artist that studied at the Academy of Fine Arts.
