The 20 Franc Angel’s obverse is packed with symbolism. At the center, a winged angel is shown writing on a tablet. Art historians and numismatists speculate this tablet is actually the French Republic’s constitution and the angel represents divine approval of democracy. On the left side, a bundle of rods is shown as a symbol of military strength. The gallic rooster, an ancient icon of France, appears at the lower right.
The reverse displays the coin’s denomination of 20 Francs surrounded by a wreath and the motto “LIBERTE, EGALITE, FRATERNITE.” Each coin displays the “A” mintmark, indicating that the coin was struck at the Paris Mint (aka Monnaie de Paris).
