The Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Series is among the industry’s most popular and as such, the certified versions of these coins are just as popular. Popular Certified Canadian Gold Coins

  • Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins: One of the best-selling gold bullion coins in the world, Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins are a popular certified option as well. The coin program debuted in 1979 and has released coins annually ever since. Coins are now available in sizes such as 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/20 oz, and 1 gram.
  • Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins with Privy Marks: The Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Series is one of the most diverse due to its special privy mark coins. The Royal Canadian Mint releases special privy mark coins that add more value to the already esteemed Maple Leaf Series.
  • Canadian Commemorative Gold Coins: Much like the US Mint, The Royal Canadian Mint also releases special coins to commemorate historical or significant events in Canada. These coins are few and far between, making certified versions all the more rare and valuable.

Certified Canadian Maple Leaf Gold

The Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coin was just the second gold bullion coin to be made available to investors. While the coin was the second of its kind, following the 1967 release of the South African Krugerrand Gold Coin, the Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coin was the first gold bullion coin in the world to be released with a purity of .9999 pure gold.

The series has featured various obverse designs over the years that can add to the value from a certification standpoint. These obverse designs are the following:

  • 1979-1989: Arnold Machin’s depiction of a 39-year-old Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen is in right-profile relief donning a tiara.
  • 1990-2003: Dora de Pedery-Hunt’s depiction of a 64-year-old Queen Elizabeth II. The queen is portrayed in right-profile relief with the George IV State Diadem Crown.
  • 2004-2023: Susanna Blunt’s depiction of a 79-year-old Queen Elizabeth II. She’s seen with no crown, a first since 1952.
  • 2024-Present: For the first time in the history of the series, someone other than Queen Elizabeth II was featured. This portrait of King Charles III was created by Steven Rosati.

Difference Between an MS70 and an MS69

For modern releases, the most common grades you’ll see are MS69 and MS70. A 70 is the highest grade a coin can receive and as such is a perfect specimen. The differences between the two are the following:

  • MS/Proof 70: These coins are considered perfect specimens with no post-production imperfections when viewed under 5x magnification. These coins have their full, original mint luster.
  • MS/Proof 69: These coins are near-perfect specimens with a maximum of two minor detractions such as hairlines or minor contact marks. These coins also display their full, original mint luster.
