1/2 oz Gold Coins

The standard size for gold coins is 1 oz weight, but they are quite expensive. So, many sovereign mints issue fractional versions of their bullion coins alongside the 1 oz gold coin to appeal to a wider swath of investors who want to buy gold coins.

The largest of these smaller coins, known as fractional coins, is the 1/2 oz gold coin. It offers the same level of gold purity as its larger brother, but at almost half the price. If your budget isn’t quite ready to buy a 1 oz gold coin, the 1/2 oz gold coins we offer on Provident Metals may give you the leeway you need to start investing in gold.

Popular 1/2 oz Gold Coins on Provident Metals

Though there are a myriad of 1/2 oz gold coins available, some of them are more popular than others. Here are some of the leading candidates to consider if you’re in the market for one of these half-ounce gold pieces:

  • Gold Eagle – The Eagle is an homage to Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ classic Liberty design on his Double Eagle. The Eagle may be the most popular coin for investors – certainly in the US – and is minted to be .9167 pure, or in 22-karat gold.
  • Gold Maple Leaf – The Canadian Maple Leaf’s claim to fame is its purity, as it was the earliest bullion coin to offer a .9999 fine coin. Its 1/2 oz version comes with the same level of exceptional fineness as the 1 oz coin.
  • Gold Britannia – Britannia is the personification of the British Isles, and adorns the reverse of the Royal Mint’s 1/2 oz coin. Like the larger coin, the Britannia is minted to be .9999 pure.
  • Gold Kangaroo – The signature coin from down under may be the lesser-known of the Perth Mint’s products (after the Lunar series), but the Kangaroo is still a .9999 pure coin worthy of consideration.
  • Gold Philharmonic – The 1/2 oz Philharmonic joins the group of other high-purity coins and is a 99.99% pure gold coin. However, it may be the only coin in the world to feature musical instruments on both its obverse and reverse.
  • Gold Libertad – The 1/2 oz gold Libertad garners much of its cachet due to its relative rarity among other bullion coins. Amid low mintage numbers and, in some cases, a lack of production, this .999 pure coin trades on the fact that they are harder to find than other similar coins.
  • Gold Krugerrand – The 1 oz Krugerrand began the entire industry of publicly available sovereign bullion coins in 1967. Its 1/2 oz version did not appear until 1980, but features the same design and 22-karat purity of its iconic brethren.
  • Noah’s Ark – Though the 1/2 oz Noah’s Ark sports both an Armenian face value and the full faith and credit of the Armenian government, this .9999 pure gold coin is made by Geiger Edelmetalle, a German refiner working as a third-party mint on Armenia’s behalf. It features an image of Noah’s Ark, the familiar object from the Old Testament captained by Noah through the Great Flood.
  • Somalian Elephant– Though the 1/2 oz Somalian Elephant bears a face value, verbiage, and imagery that seem to convey official recognition by the Somali government, this coin has not been used as legal tender or passed by the country’s central bank – likely due to the ongoing civil unrest and turmoil in the nation. However, it is still a beautiful .9999 fine coin produced by a sovereign mint, as Germany’s Bavarian Mint produces it – nominally, at least – on behalf of Somalia itself.

If none of our 1/2 ounce gold coins hit the mark for your needs, that’s alright. We also have a host of options for 1 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold coins. Visit one of those pages to find what you want.

Different Types of 1/2 oz Gold Coins

Like most activities, coin collecting has its own set of terms and lingo. You’ll notice some of these terms as you look through our selection of 1/2 oz gold coins, so the bullets below should give you some clarity about what all that stuff means:

  • BU/Brilliant Uncirculated – “BU,” or “Brilliant Uncirculated” refers to the condition of the coin in question. These coins are likely flawless to the untrained eye, but have enough aberrations to disqualify them as being in true mint condition.
  • David Hall – David Hall is the co-founder of the Professional Coin Grading Service, one of two industry standards for the examination and grading of coin condition, and his signature on a coin’s label is the numismatic equivalent of a celebrity autograph.
  • Box & CoA – A CoA is a Certificate of Authenticity, a document from one of the grading services or another numismatic expert that confirms the condition and authenticity of your coin. The box is, well, the box that contains the coin and the CoA.
  • Proof – Coins minted with specially-designed planchets/blanks that are pressed multiple times under higher pressures than usual. The result is a coin with frosted reliefs, or raised portions, and mirrored fields, or stamped portions.
  • MS/Mint State – A coin in pristine condition that has never been touched by human hand since its mintage and is preserved in such a manner as to keep the coin flawless – even at the microscopic level.
  • Graded – A coin that has been examined and classified by the the PCGS mentioned above or the Numismatic Guaranty Company, or NGC – the two industry standards for independent numismatic investigation.
  • 70 or other numbers – A coin is graded according to the Sheldon Grading Scale, which rates the condition of a coin on a scale between 1 – 70. Coins rated above 60 are generally considered to be in mint state or near-mint state.
  • Random year – The year of a coin’s mintage matters significantly toward its value, especially if the year in question had low production numbers or a particular design. If you select a random year coin, you’ll receive a coin selected from an indeterminate year, but you’ll pay slightly less for it.
