The coins of the Great Britain Sovereign Gold denominations were introduced in 1817 following a major revision of British coins. Great Britain 1/2 Sovereign Gold Coins were produced in two different types from 1817 to the present. The initial release of the coins took place from 1817 to 1926 as circulation specimens. These coins were predominantly struck and released in England through the Royal Mint, but 1/2 Sovereigns were also issued in Australia and India as each was an important part of the British Empire in the 19th century. From 1926 to 1952, 1/2 Sovereigns were typically only struck in coronation years. As of 1980, the coins have again been available, but now as bullion and proof specimens.

Obverse

On the obverse of Great Britain 1/2 Sovereign Gold Coins is a depiction of the reigning British monarch from the era in which the coin was struck. The most common examples by the range of dates would be those from Queen Victorias reign from 1837 to 1901. Other monarchs include King George III, George IV, William IV, Edward VI, and George V as circulation pieces, as well as Queen Elizabeth II as bullion and proof specimens. The coins typically have inscriptions of the monarchs name and title on the obverse, with the exact language of the legend changing over the course of time.

Reverse

The reverse field of the Great Britain Sovereign Gold Coin comes with one of two possible images. The original design from 1817 was that of St. George on horseback slaying a dragon. This was designed by Benedetto Pistrucci and featured on the coins until the reign of William IV and Queen Victoria, and again from the latter years of Victorias reign. Some of the coins from William VI and Victorias reigns feature the Royal Arms. Inscriptions on this face generally include only a date mark.

History

The Great Britain Sovereign Gold Coins were introduced in 1817 and available as the Sovereign, Double Sovereign, and Half Sovereign. Each coin had legal tender status with a value in Pound sterling of One Pound, Two Pound, or Half Pound, respectively.
