The inscriptions on this side of the coin vary by issue and monarch, but all inscriptions identify the reigning monarch.

Reverse

One of two designs can be found on the reverse of Great Britain Sovereign Gold Coins. Most coins and date marks feature the image of St. George on horseback slaying the dragon. This design was created in 1817 by Benedetto Pistrucci and was used annually with the exception of the early decades of Queen Victorias reign. During those decades, the coins came with the Royal Arms of England on the reverse instead. Inscriptions on this side typically include the date mark.

History

The 1/2 Sovereign Gold Coin debuted in 1817 with the Sovereign and Double Sovereign following Great Britains recoinage. The move ended the production of gold Guineas and brought back a design concept inspired by the English Sovereign of the 15th century.
