Rooted in the history of the Tudor Dynasty in the 15th and 16th centuries, the modern Great Britain Sovereign coins can trace their minting history back to the release of the English Sovereign coins. The coins were so-named as sovereigns for the appearance of the reigning monarch of England on the obverse of all issues. Provident Metals now offers the popular Great Britain 1/2 Sovereign Gold Coins to you for purchase online with an NGC grade.

When you purchase the Great Britain 1/2 Sovereign Gold Coin in this product listing at Provident Metals, the coins available here come with a plastic slab from the NGC and an About Uncirculated 50+. Coins with this grade showcase extremely light or only trace wear on the highest points of relief on the design strike. Additionally, the coins may still have medium to full mint luster.

Provident Metals is pleased to offer these coins to you from random years of issue. The possible date marks range from 1817 to the 1930s, with any date mark of 1980 or later a bullion specimen rather than a circulation piece. We select all coins at random to fulfill your order, so we cannot guarantee a date mark and corresponding design in advance. If you buy multiples, it is possible the coins you receive will have matching dates and designs.

British monarchs feature on the obverse side of Great Britain 1/2 Sovereign Gold Coins. From the reign of King George III in the early-19th century to the reign of King George VI in the 20th century, countless British monarchs have featured on the obverse in either left- or right-profile relief. The inscriptions on this side of the coin vary by issue and monarch, but all inscriptions identify the reigning monarch.

One of two designs can be found on the reverse of Great Britain Sovereign Gold Coins. Most coins and date marks feature the image of St. George on horseback slaying the dragon. This design was created in 1817 by Benedetto Pistrucci and was used annually with the exception of the early decades of Queen Victorias reign. During those decades, the coins came with the Royal Arms of England on the reverse instead. Inscriptions on this side typically include the date mark.

The 1/2 Sovereign Gold Coin debuted in 1817 with the Sovereign and Double Sovereign following Great Britains recoinage. The move ended the production of gold Guineas and brought back a design concept inspired by the English Sovereign of the 15th century.
